expressions music academy is expanding!

In 2010, 24-year-old piano teacher, Jessica Schatz, did something crazy and started up her own music school in the metro Detroit area with less than $5,000 and her 50 students (amazing story told HERE). Nearly 12 years, 3 states, 12 locations (and growing), over 250 employees, and over 3,200 students later, she is spreading the love and excitement of her company further around both the Metro Detroit and Metro DC areas! With plans for more locations, Expressions is primed to grow and is looking to hire two more exceptional new administrative professionals.

We’re looking for team-oriented, optimistic, incredibly organized, reliable, and responsible people who know how to balance work and fun. We are a genuine, people-caring, personal business that cares about growth for its employees. Growth is what we expect and what we commit to for every employee. We enjoy all the best parts of being a small business - flexibility, fun, excitement, teamwork, friendship, family-like atmosphere - while enjoying all the best parts of a medium-size/larger business such as impressive structure, organization, technology, and systems. We’re in a beautiful place as a company and we’re looking for two new beautiful people to join our beautiful family!

This position has the strong potential to grow into more responsibility and higher pay as it has for the existing staff in Detroit & DC. We are looking for strong leaders to contribute to our vision, bringing their own vision and unique strengths to the table.

Our history:

Expressions is now the largest music school in Michigan and one of the largest private music schools in the country. We have grown to over 3,200 weekly private students between our twelve locations. Expressions is an energetic, innovative music school with a growing, impressive community of over 230 highly qualified instructors and 25 administrative/management staff in various departments. We are extremely organized and our admin and management teams handle all of the student recruiting and promotion, registration, scheduling, make-ups, billing, policies, special projects, recitals, and much more. We foster a strong sense of community and teamwork among all of our staff and we place a strong emphasis on the quality of education we offer to our students. Expressions is a cheerful, energetic, fast-paced, fun, and exceptionally supportive place to work.

basic requirements:

The basic starting responsibilities include:

  • Assisting parents and students enthusiastically on the phone and in person at the front desk

  • Scheduling private lessons for adults and children

  • Managing electronic communications from students, parents, and teachers with an expectation of a prompt reply

  • Being very knowledgeable of and comfortable with the sales-forward aspect of promoting our lesson programs to inquiring students

  • Processing new student enrollments, schedule changes, withdrawals, requests, etc. following our structured checklists

  • Assisting with and prioritizing miscellaneous projects and tasks as assigned

  • Basic facility upkeep, light cleaning, and organizing

The basic requirements include:

  • Reliable transportation

  • Consistent attendance and punctuality

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented

  • A love for working with people

  • Strong basic computer and typing skills

  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills

  • Comfortability with light sales - this typically involves promoting our programs to inquiring students and confidently providing options for those who are considering stopping lessons

EXTENSIVE training provided:

We provide comprehensive, personalized, hands-on training for all new members of our admin team. The training program has three phases:

  1. Training starts with a week-long overview of our entire company and operations

  2. The new employee then works through 1-2 weeks of interactive shadowing with members of our current team

  3. Training ends with 2-4 weeks of the “desk buddy” phase which allows the new employee to work independently at their own work station, but with a co-worker at a work station nearby for support

Throughout the training phase, constant, patient support and coaching is provided. Beyond that, support for all of our admin staff is consistently available via information, assistance, and encouragement from each other as well as refreshing accessibility to management, who works extremely hard to make sure our team is always comfortable. Learning a new administrative job is never for the faint of heart, but we’ve got a system and a solid track record and if you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to get you there! We are a teaching company, after all, and we love to teach and encourage!

what the current admin team has to say:

(Yes, all these cool people would be your co-workers!!!)

Everyone that comes to work with Expressions will tell you that the culture is unlike anything they’ve ever experienced before. Management does a really incredible job of hiring some of the coolest, friendliest, most supportive people you could ever hope to work with, which makes for an amazing work environment. Everyone is truly willing to lend a hand and answer questions at any time. There are a lot of perks with the position, including free lessons, excellent health and dental insurance, incredibly flexible time-off scheduling opportunities, and a relaxed atmosphere. Management is flexible to the changing needs and interests of admins and always open to new ideas, encouraging creativity. The job itself can be incredibly busy and entail a lot of work, which is ultimately very rewarding when you see the smiling faces of students exiting their lessons. If these are things you value in a workplace, this might be the place for you!
— Deb, Studio Manager
As cliche as it may sound, I found a family as well as a terrific job when I found Expressions. I am valued, praised, supported and respected here. Management is always available to help out and my co-workers are always willing to answer questions, help with the workload, or make me smile with a hilarious joke. Team building and personal ownership over the growth of Expressions makes me want to work hard for this company and makes me genuinely care about its success! The culture at Expressions is spectacular. 10/10 recommend!
— Gretchen, Processing Specialist
I feel incredibly fortunate to work at EMA. As an administrator, I am constantly impressed by the level of dedication and care that my colleagues bring to their work every day. It’s a joy to be part of a team that is so passionate about music and committed to creating a positive impact in the world.

For me, the best part of working at EMA is the sense of community that we have here. From day one, I felt welcomed and valued by my colleagues. It’s an incredibly supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to grow and thrive. As someone who is passionate about music, this place is a dream come true. I am constantly amazed by my wonderful colleagues and get to see the growth of so many students that come here. I feel lucky to work with to be part of an organization that truly makes a difference in people’s lives.
— Sharon, Studio Manager
Coming into Expressions is such a fantastic experience, everyone is so friendly and helpful. The staff at Expressions is always helpful and ready to teach you and make any experience a learning experience. Working here for 3 months has taught me a lot about people skills and organizational skills and also allowed me to use my creative skills every day. You work hard, but everyone is always offering help or offering up a joke to make the busy moments fun. It’s a great creative place to work, with a mixture of things happening every day that keep the job entertaining! If you want someplace to help you grow and figure out your place in life, Expressions is definitely the place to go!
— Mo, Creative Director
I have been with Expressions for just over six months and I can confidently say it is the best job I have ever had! As a former full-time music teacher, I am very passionate about the importance of a quality music education which is the reason I first applied to this position. Expressions is better than I could have imagined because not only is the team committed to the growth of the students that we serve, but the faculty and staff as well. We are encouraged to bring new ideas to the table and they are always listened to and often utilized. The admin team is by far the most helpful, kind, and supportive group of people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. There is usually someone offering help before you even have a chance to ask and there is not a day that goes by at work where I am not laughing out loud at the front desk.

If the overall atmosphere of working for Expressions doesn’t convince you to apply, the benefits have to! The included medical and dental insurance is a game changer and the biggest selling point for me is the work-life balance. Not only are we able to leave work at work, but there is also usually someone waiting to tell you to enjoy your day off when your workaholic side tries to make an appearance. The free music lessons that are included as a benefit are not only an awesome perk for personal growth but allows us to better understand the student side of the business.

TLDR; Expressions is an awesome company filled with awesome people and you should definitely apply!
— Paige, Studio Administrator
I joined EMA less than a year ago, and I already know it’s going to be one of my favorite jobs I’ve ever had. The administration and my co-workers have gone out of their way to provide a fun, safe, and encouraging environment for everyone involved in the company, whether that’s for desk staff, teachers, or students. At the end of the day, empathy leads many decisions, and I couldn’t be happier with that philosophy. So long as you work to improve and contribute to the same ideology, you will be given opportunities to grow within the company in whatever avenues you would prefer. No idea is too outrageous and all thoughts are heard, no matter how small or insignificant. I highly recommend working here!
— Shari, Studio Administrator
While I’ve only been here a bit less than a year, I could talk for hours about how much I love this job and my coworkers. This is the first time I’ve had a job where I feel respected, valued, and heard. Not only does management care about your professional growth, but your personal growth as well - even going so far as to plan personal development seminars for us. Everyone on the team is supportive, always ready to lend a hand, and just so much fun to work with. There’s truly never a day when we don’t all laugh together, and it makes working here so enjoyable. I stumbled upon this job by chance, but now I wouldn’t have it any other way!
— Casey, Studio Administrator
I’ve been with Expressions for over thirteen years and at this point, it’s really hard to overstate how much this place means to me. Of all the wonderful things I could say, what I feel most proud of is being with a company that positively impacts so many lives. The music education we provide greatly enriches our community, and as Expressions continues to grow, our teachers and administrative staff are able to bring joy to more and more lives. We are an incredibly enthusiastic, hard-working, and passionate group of people and I would never want to work anywhere else!
